Today is my birthday, but I am not going to celebrate it with family and
friends, because on August 4, I celebrated
that I was 20,000 days old.
At the end of the afternoon, I went to the Imaginaryexhibition in the top of
the building Horst at University of Twente, which is about (the visualization
of) mathematics. Quit interesting, although I did not learn much news, but it
was fun to play with the tiles and make periodical and aperiodical tilings. I
talked with the two math students that acted as hosts. At the end they gave me
a free catalog.
In the evening, I wrote a program to figure out how to the basic fractal form
of the Fractal Jigsaw puzzle using
SVG can
be generated. Below the result showing three shapes with increasing size,
using the same algorithm with more recursion:
This afternoon, I went to TETEM art space and
there I experienced and enjoyed We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together, a light and sound
installation by Doron Sadja, about which
I cannot see much if you have not experienced it yourself. I also watched
the video about the work, which, as
is often the case, did not reveal much. I looked around the graphics
exhibition, and as happened before when I revisit an exhibition with works
from many different artists, I noticed some works that I did not remember
having seen before, while I definitely must have seen them. In a corner of the
reception hall, I noticed audio-DH with many
wierd, but also interesting sound fragments. I found the fragment by
Mariska de Groot interesting
enough to listen till the end. I think about buying the physical edition.
This evening, I went to see the movie
Arrival. Quite an
interesting experience. I did not find it very scarry. It would indeed be very
interessing if the events as depicted in the movie would occur. It would
definitely help humanity to rise above its current state. It is advicable, as
usual, not to watch the trailer. I saw the trailer, but it was many months ago,
so I had forgotten most of it.
Together with Andy, I paid a short visit to the
open day of the AKI. We were greated by a
cheerful student asking us whether we wanted some information about the
workshops being given and offered us a drink voucher. I declined both. It was
interesting to look around all the studios. We saw some students working with
pots turntables. I also discovered they have some wood and metal workshops.
I discovered that the rooms that are used as exhibition rooms during the final
examinations, are actually in use by the students as their workrooms, and were
filled with half finished works of art. I would have loved to spend some hours
looking around, but Andy was dragging me around, and indication that he rather
wanted to go home. At the library they were selling examination catalogues,
which I have been collecting, for
three Euro each or four for ten Euro. Around 12:02, I bought the following
four examination catalogues for € 2.50 each:
Eindexamenwerk 1984 edited by Johan Ghijsles, Julius Visser, and
Hans Vollenboek, written in Dutch, published by AKI Enschede in June 1984.
Eindexamenwerk 1985 written in Dutch, published by AKI Enschede in
1985.
Eindexamen 2004: AKI Akademie Voor Beeldende Kunst Enschede written
by Kees t' Hart edited by Peter C. Sonderen and Wouter Hooijmans, written in
Dutch, published by AKI akademie voor beeldende kunst Enschede in 2004,
ISBN:9789075522235.
AKI 06/07 edited by Philipp Gieseler, Wouter Hooijmans, Malt
Rettberg, Peter Sonderen, and Anne Tol, written in Dutch and English,
published by AKI, ArtEZ academie voor beeldende kunsten Enschede in June
2007, ISBN:9789075522297.
I used Google translate to translate a message to Chinese (Mandrin). I used
the reverse translation to verify that the translation was acceptable. I had
to make some changes to the English text to make the reverse translation
express the same, which hopefully has made the Chinese translation more
accurate. I have to admit that the reverse translation contained some
improvements of my own text with respect to the use of certain expressions.
At 14:41:54, I bought the book Khomeini, Sade en ik written by
Abnousse Shalmani,
written in Dutch, published by De Geus - Oxfam Novib in 2015, translated by
Jan Versteeg from Khomeiny, Sade et moi written in French,
ISBN:9789044534504, from bookshop Broekhuis
for € 9.95.
On November 8, there was a laser cutter workshop at TkkrLab where someone brought an image of a cardboard disk for an old
music playing box, with the question whether it could be cut on the laser
cutter. It turned out that it was rather hard to transform the image into a
clean SVG file that could be laser cut. This was due to the poor contrast and
the shadows cast by the cardboard. The music playing box is from around 1900.
I found some information in
the "Instrumenten Kabinet" document under number 581. I have been working
on a script for the MySample editor in the mean time. (I had to make some modifications to
MySample to add functions for the sine and cosine.) One of the problems proved
to be to find the center of the disc. I introduced a method that searches for
the optimal value searching from an initial point. I still have to add the part
that generates an SVG files, but that is relatively easy, now that it can
output a list of notes on each of the sixteen tracks. The script uses a one
tenth degree resolution to determine the start and end of each note. Below a
scaled down version of one of the result images generated by the script:
From the railway station, I walked through the streets Voor Clarenburg and
Mariastraat to bookshop De Wijze Kater, which appeared to by a new age type
of bookshop, which with a passage is connected to another shop selling singing
bowls, incense and such. They had a whole shelf with books by Osho, which were all quite expensive. Next I went to small Stach food
shop to collect a food bar that came with the city trip train ticket that I
bought. I walked under the Dom Tower, and considered the option to climb it, as the sky looked
quite clear and because it had been such a long time ago that I climbed it.
(I remember having climbed it with Li-Xia when
she was pregnant with Annabel, which was 22
years ago.) I did walk through quadrangle besides the Dom church, a place with
special memories for me. Next I went to bookshop Steven Sterk, which has a lot of ramsj. I bought a small book as a present
for one of my sisters. After I brought a short visit to bookshop Aleph, I
visited Broese Boekverkopers. Not much has
changed since the last time, I visited this bookshop more than four years ago.
I did not buy any book.
I visited Tetem Art spaces. Here I first
watched the exhibitionAll is transformed,
which I did not find very interesting. Next I experienced We Are Never Ever
Ever Getting Back Together again. There was now a push button at the
entrence to start the installation. Next I went to The Overkill Festival, but when I heard that the ticket costed 10 Euro, I
immediately decided to leave, also because I did not plan to stay very long.
At bookshop Broekhuis, I met with René
Völker, who has an exposition of his painting at the top floor. We talked
for a long time. He gets the inspiration for his painting by playing with
Lego bricks. I find his works
quite interesting. At last, I went to the pop-up gallery, which just opened
yesterday and has works of about twenty different artists from the region. I
found the following noteworthy:
I extended the script from
last Thursday with a procedure to produce
a SVG file that gives a representation
of the disc as found by the script.
